Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the sensational teenage prodigy of Rajasthan Royals, once again hogged the limelight in IPL 2026 when he smashed one of the most destructive innings ever seen in tournament history during the Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The stunning 97-run innings by the young batter not only led to SRH’s exit from IPL 2023 but also saw him top the Orange Cap chart.
Sooryavanshi had clearly no interest in getting stuck into the pitch — playing in a highly-pressurized knockout matchup, and got off to an aggressive start from ball 1. The left-handed opener took apart all the Sunrisers Hyderabad bowlers with incredible aggression, hitting boundaries all over the park as the first innings turned into one-way traffic! He accounted for 97 runs in just 29 balls which featured an incredible 12 sixes, perhaps one of the most destructive playoff knocks seen ever in IPL history.
Sooryavanshi Leads RR’s Batting Carnage
Rajasthan Royals had a go at it after being asked to bat first. But Sooryavanshi shifted the balance of the game entirely towards RR. The 18-year-old went hammer and tongs at the SRH bowlers as Rajasthan sped to 125 in just eight overs.
NOTHING WORKED: No bowling change thrown up by the Sunrisers could stop him. Sooryavanshi refused to stop finding the boundary with pace or spin. His fearless stroke play was excited fans, and cricketers who were watching this match could not believe their eyes. When he left for 97, Rajasthan were already heavily in control of the match.
By the time Rajasthan Royals had crossed the mini-milestone with a total of 243/8, SRH’s task in a knockout fixture seemed insurmountable.
Record-Breaking Six-Hitting Display
Its Sooryavanshi’s six-hitting arsenal that would stand out from the rest. In the Eliminator, he hit 12 sixes, breaking Chris Gayle’s long-held IPL record for most sixes in one season.
That haul illustrates just how much of an impact the teen has had on IPL 2026. His fearlessness against bowlers has been reminiscent of some of the all-time great power-hitters in T20; he has dominated bowling attacks this season.

The ramifications of the Eliminator knock was much more than Rajasthan Royals’ last qualification hopes. His knock of 97 in Sooryavanshi’s run will position him at the top for Orange Cap and become IPL 2026 highest run scorer.
The Orange Cap is a closely contested prize in every IPL season and this year has certainly not lacked big star batters scoring above 600 runs. Players in contention include the likes of Sai Sudharsan, Heinrich Klaasen, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli. But Sooryavanshi’s most recent heroics pulled him ahead of the field and onto the top of the leaderboard.
The contention remains alive for now with the playoffs still on but the Rajasthan Royals star has placed himself in a strong position as Qualifier 2 approaches.
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Season Ends
It was a bitter ending to an otherwise stunning season that had seen Sunrisers Hyderabad come back from the brink. SRH have had a troublesome start to the campaign but found their way back into playoff contention and re-became one of the most dangerous batting line-ups in the tournament.
But Sooryavanshi delivered an unbelievable performance that broke the winning streak for them. Rajasthan’s aggressive approach proved to be too much for the bowling attack, and the chase never really got going enough to make a challenge of chasing 244.
Though there are some players in the SRH setup that impressed throughout the season, enough to earn selection for India as well, Sunrisers just couldn’t make it through the knock-out stage of things really and find themselves pondering on lost opportunities tun itself denying them.
Cricket world hailed the young star
Sooryavanshi has earned widespread acclaim from former players, coaches and even cricket experts of the game. Along with his outstanding consistency, he batted aggressively making him one of the most effective and talked about cricketer of IPL 2026.
So great has been the youngsters rise that former IPL chairman Lalit Modi reportedly called him one of the best buys in IPL history. On the other hand, multiple coaches and former players who have seen him play have praised his talent as well as his maturity at a young age.
Sooryavanshi breaks records, but it is just 15 on title. His performances have turned him from a promising prospect into one of the tournament’s biggest stars.
What Lies Ahead?
Rajasthan Royals move onto Qualifier 2, Sooryavanshi can again keep supporting his team and also push to secure the Orange Cap in IPL 2026 for himself. The franchise is now just one win shy of the Finals.
The batting was explosive and if his performance in the Eliminator is any indication, opposition teams will need to have a special plan for this teenage star.
